The Struggles of a Young Black Man in America

Jamal is a 16 years old black kid who grew up in Bronx, New York, a neighborhood that had high level of poverty. Jamal lived with his mother and older brother in a small apartment, he could hear his neighbors talking through the walls. He really smart kid who wanted more than playing basketball, but he was trying to fit in between his friends she he had to act like he is careless and not good in school. For example; when the teacher asked him in class and she knew that he knew the answer but he acted like he I didn’t know so he won’t look like he knows in front of his friends. Jamal is a smart kid for example; when that guy who bring the food for William parked his car in the streets and saw Jamal looking at his car “BMW” he was making sure he had it looked, but then Jamal started talking to him about the history of “BMW”, that showed how smart and educated Jamal is. Jamal faced a lot of obstacles like he didn’t have a father he grew up without a father. Jamal’s and William’s relationship was really good because William became like his father later on through the movie. I think it’s really hard for a person to grow up in poverty.

Sense: “The Window”
Jamal and his friends were playing basketball outside. Then, suddenly one of Jamal’s friends mentioned “window” Jamal asked what the “window” is. At that time William was looking at them from the window. One of Jamal’s friends says “he sees us, but we can’t see him”.  Liked that sense because that what got me interested in the story I got excited to see who that guy is, and why he was looking at them from the window.

  1. I really liked the scene when the guy was suspicious about Jamal-- the BMW scene. Keep looking for good quotes because the quote you chose doesn't really connect to your theme.

  2. He did faced a lot of obstacles in his life but as soon as he met Forrester , he changed and that way he could keep going on his writing without anyone seeing him. Just like when Forrester said to him " whatever we write in this apartment stays in this apartment. GOOD JOB!
